What is the Good News?
How often have you heard someone say, “I have good news for
you?” When you hear that what is it that
usually follows such a pronouncement?
You have won the lottery! You
have a new baby girl? Your disease has
disappeared. You have been chosen selected,
etc. To be sure these statements are all good news, but I want to
share with you something that far out weights them all. In the church we have a word for “Good
news” and it is the word “Gospel.”
The word Gospel is a compound word in the Old English which
means “Good Story.”
Gos (God) spel (story)
We believe we have the good story which is for all people. The good news is that God has come to earth
in the person of Jesus Christ and has paid completely for man’s sin. (Romans 4:24, Romans 5:6-8; II Corinthians
5:20-21, Hebrews 10:12-19
Because of Christ’s death on the cross we will never have to
suffer the wrath of God (Romans 5:9-11).
There are no laws, or rules, or rituals to follow (Colossians 2:16-23).
God has chosen to save his people from their sins by turning them from their
sins and causing them to trust in Christ alone as their substitute.
(Lamentations 5:21, Acts 3:19)
Think of it this way.
You have rebelled against a holy and just and perfect God and, as result, you are headed for judgment and will
face his eternal wrath, but God, who is rich in mercy, made a way for you to
never have to worry about facing his wrath that you justly deserve (John
3:17-36, Ephesians 2:1-10)
If God has spoken to you about your need of forgiveness then
be of good cheer he is calling you (Mark 10:46-52). Confess your sin to Christ and receive his
forgiveness and you will become the recipient of the greatest news ever told (I
John 1:7-10).
This is not just a story, it really is history(I Corinthians
15:1-3. This gospel has been verified by
archeology, history, science, physics and logic (Romans 1:18-24, Psalms
19:1-11). If you see that you have
rebelled against God and understand that you cannot save yourself this Good
News is for you. In prayer turn your heart to God and ask for his forgiveness
which he provided for you in Christ and you can find the greatest news ever
heard, then you can really know what the Gospel is firsthand (Psalms 4:7,
Psalms 16:11, John 10:10).
